Step 1 - CBT - You must have a current Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate. Once taken it lasts 2 years before expiry.
Step 2 - You need to pass a motorcycle theory test . Once passed it lasts 2 years before expiry.
Step 3 - Practical test – called Module 1 - This test validates that you are in control of the motorbike, not the other way round. Once passed it lasts up to 2 years but expires when your theory test expires.
Step 4 - Practical test – called Module 2. This test validates that you can ride correctly on the public highway adhering the highway code and general roadcraft. Once passed – that's it, you've done it!
Steps 1 & 2 can be in any order, Steps 3 & 4 cannot be done before Step 2.
The procedure is the same for all categories of motorcycle licence:
- AM moped – 50cc and max speed of 28mph
- A1 light bike up to 125cc with power output upto 11kW
- A2 medium bike typically 500cc, but power output up to 35kW and power to weight ratio no more than 0.2kW/kg
- A unlimited bike, typically for training we use 650cc with power out greater than 35kW and power to weight ration greater than 0.2kW/kg
(Please don’t worry about engine capacity and power to weight ratios as we can talk you through all of this ‘complexity’)
Once any full category is passed there is no need to retake the CBT or theory.
We offer a comprehensive range of courses covering the Standard CBT and Fast Track Renewal courses through to full motorbike direct access scheme (DAS) , class A1,A2 or full A.
To take a full motorbike licence you will need to start with a CBT. We now have 3 x CBT sites and 13 instructors who are fully trained to take you on this amazing journey. For CBTs we have both geared and automatic bikes and scooters. Whatever your age from 16 years we have almost certainly have a bike for you.
The CBT is a (Compulsory Basic Training) course validating a provisional motorcycle or moped licence. It is designed to ensure new riders get the training they need to be safe on the road. If this is your first CBT or if you are wanting to learn new skills such as using a geared bike for the first time, a standard course will be most suitable.
The course includes both practical training and classroom sessions. The classroom discussion will cover the choice of protective clothing and equipment as well as the basic principles of roadcraft such as hazard and speed awareness. Before coming along its a good idea to have a read of the Highway Code. The practical training will cover the correct use of the controls, riding the bike in a controlled off-road site and includes the basics of motorcycle care. The final section of the CBT is a road ride of at least 2 hours in length.
Of course, as indicated, we have an extensive range of motorbikes for CBTs and full bike training across the motorbike classes, including a few motorbikes especially lowered for those of a shorter stature.
We cover all types of motorbike training courses from CBT through DAS to Advanced training. We also have sessions for the 'rusty rider' - those coming back to riding after a break or those who simply wish to have more training. We can also personalise our courses if you wish for a 1:1 session.
Since we have such a large fleet of bikes and qualified instructors we can usually start your training within 10 -14 days - or maybe even sooner! Why not give us a call on 01473 463123 or enquire on line with us. We are here to help you and provide an enjoyable experience from start to finish.
